EU to change rules on hand luggage in airplanes: European Commission's explanation.

European Commission reintroduces restrictions on carrying liquids in hand luggage
The European Commission has announced that starting September 1, 2024, airports in EU member countries will introduce restrictions on carrying liquids in hand luggage. According to the Commission's decision, all liquids must be under 100 ml and placed in a transparent plastic bag.
This decision reverses the loosening of restrictions on carrying liquids, which applied to airports with new C3 hand luggage equipment.
The new rules will apply to all EU airports, including those with explosive detection systems in hand luggage (EDSCB), which previously allowed carrying liquids over 100 ml.
Restrictions for hand luggage
In addition to restrictions on carrying liquids, the European Commission has established recommendations for hand luggage:
- Weight limit: slightly over 10 kg.
- Quantity limit: one hand luggage + one small personal item.
- Size limit: hand luggage dimensions should not exceed 55x40x20 cm, and personal items – 40x30x15 cm.
The personal item should be placed under the seat in front of the passenger.
However, the European Commission explained that airlines are not yet required to include hand luggage weighing up to 10 kg in the ticket price, and there is no single standardized size for hand luggage.
The Commission plans to hold another workshop with industry representatives to discuss weight and size standards for hand luggage.
