The suspect in the damage to underwater cables in the Baltic Sea is a citizen of Russia
According to the publication Bild, the Chinese vessel suspected of damaging two underwater cables in the Baltic Sea was operated by a citizen of Russia.
The investigation into the possible damage to telecommunications cables in the Baltic Sea involves the German federal police, Finland, and Sweden. A German Coast Guard ship will be involved in the investigation and will soon arrive at the scene.
The Chinese vessel Yi Peng 3 is suspected of damaging the cable
The investigation into the damage to two underwater cables in the Baltic Sea is being conducted by Sweden. The main suspect in this case is the Chinese vessel Yi Peng 3, which is registered in China. The 225-meter vessel from the Port Said in Egypt entered the Gulf of Finland and was in the Russian port of Ust-Luga at the beginning of November.
Damage to the underwater cable was discovered in the early morning hours
According to data from the telecommunications company Cinia, the damage to the underwater cable occurred on November 18 around 04:00 AM. Cinia's CEO Ari-Jussi Knaapila reported the malfunction at 04:04 AM, and 11 seconds later the cable was completely severed.
Another damaged underwater cable in the Baltic Sea
In addition to the two underwater cables connecting Lithuania and Sweden, a damaged communication underwater cable has also been discovered in the Baltic Sea. The Lithuanian state operator of telecommunications infrastructure C-Link reported the damage to the first cable. According to the chief technical director of the Lithuanian telecommunications company Telia, Andrius Semeshkavicius, the incident occurred on Sunday morning around 10:00 AM.
