Nearly thirty children in Nigeria face the death penalty for participating in protests.

In Nigeria, 29 children face the death penalty for participating in protests against the economic crisis
In Nigeria, 29 children aged 14 to 17 face the death penalty for participating in protests against a record economic crisis. In total, 76 protesters, among whom are minors, have been charged with ten counts of serious crimes such as treason, property destruction, and riot. This is reported by the Associated Press.
Lawyer Akintayo Balogun emphasized that under the Child Rights Act, minors cannot be held criminally responsible and sentenced to death.
"It is wrong to bring minors to a federal court if the government cannot prove that all of them are over 19 years old," he noted.
The court set bail at $5,900 for each of the accused.
"A country that should be providing education to its children has decided to punish them. These children have been in prison for 90 days without food," said another lawyer, Marshal Abubakar.
The protests in Nigeria are caused by a severe economic crisis. Despite being one of Africa's largest oil producers, Nigeria remains one of the poorest countries in the world. Inflation has reached a 28-year high, and the national currency has fallen to a historic low. Nigeria's population is 210 million, and many face acute food shortages.
Incidentally, in northern Nigeria, armed men abducted at least 20 students from medical and dental faculties who were heading to a conference. This is reported by Reuters.
Previously, it was reported that a water tragedy occurred in Nigeria. At least 20 people died as a result of a wooden boat explosion on a river in the coastal region of Bayelsa.
