The Collapse of Assad's Regime in Syria is a Defeat for Moscow - ISW.

Analysts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) have stated that the rapid demise of Assad's regime in Syria creates serious political problems for Russia, which wishes to maintain its military base in this country. Russia intervened in the conflict in Syria in 2015 to support the Assad regime, which was under threat due to mass protests. This significantly impacts Putin's strategy, who seeks to build his world with authoritarian governments, but democratic movements are hindering him. Losing influence in Syria could undermine Putin's plans to gain international support for his world. Moreover, this situation will also undermine Russia's credibility as a secure partner in the world.
Recently, Syrian rebels announced the seizure of Damascus, the capital of Syria, and the fall of Assad's regime. Syrian President Bashar Assad has left the city, and Prime Minister Mohammed al-Jalali is ready to hand over power to the opposition. All of this threatens the Russian plan to support the Assad regime.
Background
At the beginning of November 2020, the situation in northern Syria escalated. Syrian rebels killed many fighters, including soldiers of the Russian army. Later, the rebels seized control of the city of Aleppo and advanced to Hama. Heavy losses forced Russia to replace its commander of troops in Syria.
The latest news is that Assad's wife and their children fled to Russia.
