Italy will test advanced military surveillance technologies on the new G550 aircraft.

Italy has taken a significant step in enhancing its defense capabilities by acquiring an additional Gulfstream G550 aircraft, which will be used to test advanced intelligence gathering and electronic warfare systems developed by the national industry.
This event is an important sign in Italy's efforts to increase its technological independence and become a key player in areas such as electronic intelligence, radar detection and management, and electronic attack, reports Bulgarian Military.
This decision is part of a program aimed at reducing Italy's dependence on foreign technologies and strengthening its role in NATO and the European defense landscape.
The Gulfstream G550, manufactured in Savannah, Georgia, has a maximum takeoff weight of about 91,000 pounds and is equipped with two Rolls-Royce BR710 turbofan engines, each providing thrust of 15,385 pounds. Its range is approximately 6,750 nautical miles, with a service ceiling of over 51,000 feet.
The new G550 will be used exclusively for research, development, and testing of intelligence gathering and electronic attack systems being developed by Leonardo. It will not be used for operational missions.
This acquisition is part of the Italian P-MMMS (Piattaforma Multi-Missione, Multi-Sensore) program, which is a multi-year initiative. It aims to achieve full mission capability for the fleet of special G550 aircraft, which already includes two CAEW aircraft and two AISREW platforms, as well as six additional 'green' airframes awaiting conversion.
The significance of this acquisition extends beyond Italy, positioning the country as a key player in NATO and European Union strategic autonomy. In the geopolitical tensions of the Mediterranean region, having reliable intelligence and surveillance capabilities is essential.
Italy's G550 fleet, including the new test aircraft, enhances its ability to track threats ranging from smuggling to regional conflicts. CAEW aircraft have been deployed in Eastern Europe following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, demonstrating their effectiveness.
According to The Aviationist, the Italian CAEW G550 aircraft conducted an intelligence mission over Romania in March 2022, highlighting its role in NATO air patrol missions. The development of new intelligence gathering and electronic attack systems may improve their effectiveness by providing real-Time intelligence to allied forces.
By investing in research and development, Italy not only strengthens its military capabilities but also fosters economic growth and positions itself as a leader in defense technologies.
