World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day

World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is celebrated on the birthday of Swiss humanist, founder of the Red Cross, and first Nobel Peace Prize laureate Henri Dunant. This is an international humanitarian movement founded in 1863, uniting over 17 million workers and volunteers worldwide.

In 1859, Swiss businessman and writer Henri Dunant witnessed the largest battle of the Austro-Italo-French war, which claimed thousands of victims. Henri was so impressed by what he saw that he opened a hospital in a local church, where he provided first aid to the wounded, and after returning home, continued to develop the idea of creating an international voluntary organization.

What religious holiday is today

May 8 in the church calendar is the Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian. He was a close disciple and witness of Jesus Christ. His life was permeated with great love for Christ and proclaiming the Gospel.

John the Theologian was one of the three apostles whom Jesus particularly accepted to Himself and drew close to His spiritual life. He was present during the resurrection of Jairus' daughter and the Transfiguration of the Lord on Mount Tabor. He was also with Jesus during the Last Supper and in the Garden of Gethsemane during His arrest.

After the crucifixion of Christ on the Cross, John became The Guardian of the Mother of God and served Her until Her Assumption. Later, by lot, he went to the city of Ephesus, where he preached the Gospel together with his disciple Prochorus. During their missionary journeys, they experienced a shipwreck, but God preserved the Theologian in the sea abyss, showing his special purpose.

He wrote letters encouraging Christians to love God and their neighbor. John the Theologian lived a long and long-lasting life, becoming the last living witness of the incarnation of Christ.
